Monica
Daniel, CNM, MS
is a 1983 graduate from Cornell University with a BS in nutrition.
She worked for two years as a hospital nutritionist, and in
1986 graduated from Creighton University with a BS in Nursing.
Monica worked as an RN in obstetrics at Tompkins Community
Hospital, and in high risk prenatal home care in Minneapolis,
Minnesota. In
1989, she graduated from the University of Minnesota with a
MS in Midwifery. For the next year she volunteered as a midwife
in the West Indies on the island of Saint Lucia. Upon returning
to the U.S., Monica worked as a midwife and clinical director
at the Florida West Coast Birthing Center. IIn
1993 she came to the Ithaca area to be the director of September
Hill Birth Center at Schuyler Hospital. She left the birth
center in the summer of 1997 and joined the faculty at the
Frontier School of Nursing and Midwifery teaching midwifery
students part-time while starting a private home birth midwifery
practice in Ithaca.
She
holds a NYS Midwifery license and is nationally certified
by the American College of Nurse
Midwives.
Erin Shafto
Erin has been interested in homebirth and midwifery for years.
When in college, she crossed paths with a couple of midwives who
opened to her the world of pregnancy and birth and since then
has been captivated, convinced that it is the coolest thing
ever.
While away at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, she
studied outdoor education with a minor in sociology. This ideal
major took her outside to do all the activities she loves:
backpacking, climbing, kayaking, wilderness emergency medicine,
and teaching. Once out of school, however, she worked for three
years as a crisis counselor and program manager at an agency for
victims of family violence and sexual assault. At this time she
also trained as an EMT.
In 2001 she and her husband moved to the Ithaca area. In 2003
she started observing with Monica during prenatal appointments,
births, and post-partum visits. In 2004 started the accelerated
RN program at Binghamton University. For the last six weeks of
this program she chose labor and delivery as her area of focus
and worked on the L&D floor at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton,
providing labor support and postpartum care to mothers and
babies. Upon graduation in August 2005, she started working at
Cayuga Medical Center on the medical and surgical floors. She
worked there for nearly a year until her son, Marlin, was born
in June, 2006. In August 2006, she received a certificate in
neonatal resuscitation. As of September 2006, she has been
Monica’s full time nurse!
